We have all heard of the fairytale called
Little Mermaid. It has become such a popular story that Disney even made a blockbuster
cartoon movie out of it. But, did you know that the distinct statue of this half-woman, half-fish can be found in Langelinie, in Denmark's capital of Copenhagen.
This is really a
popular tourist destination in the whole of Europe. Each year, more than a million people go to this destination just to take a good look at this popular statue. The statue was built by Edvard Eriksen in the year 1913, and it became like the distinct symbol of the Scandinavian country. Locals believed that there was a true mermaid who sat on the same rock where the statue is now placed. She used to sit there because she dreamed of leaving her world to seek her Prince.
Its historical significance can be compared to New York's Statue of Liberty or Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa. These landmarks serve as symbols for countries they represent. Proof of its popularity are the numerous t-shirts, caps, and other souvenier items made with the statue's picture imprinted on it.
